Te Kaahui o Rauru proudly announces the appointment of Tahinganui Hina as the new Tumu Whakarae, succeeding Mike Neho.

Hailing from Ngaati Maika, Tahinganui brings a deep sense of connection and commitment to Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi. Born and raised in Taamaki Makaurau, Tahinganui returned home to Whanganui in 2018 and quickly reconnected with his marae, eventually becoming a trustee for Paakaraka Marae.

In 2021, Tahinganui joined Te Paepae o Te Kaahui o Rauru as one of 16 new members. Demonstrating leadership and governance expertise, Tahinganui was elected by his Paahuki to be one of six new Paepae Kookiri (Executive Committee) members. With his first term as a Paepae Representative concluding, he was encouraged by his whaanau and hapuu to pursue the role of Tumu Whakarae with Mike unable to be re-elected after completing two terms.

Tahinganui’s vision builds upon the strong foundations laid by his predecessor. He is focused on strengthening the Paepae, supporting new representatives, and fostering informed and inclusive decision-making across the iwi. “Creating a balance and ensuring no one is left behind is important for me in this role. As an iwi leader, I know it’s my responsibility to maintain the relationships that those before me have established and to do so with integrity,” Tahinganui said. “We are Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi. Kiitahi is what’s important.”

Outgoing Tumu Whakarae Mike Neho leaves behind a remarkable legacy after more than 25 years of service. As a champion for Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi, Mike played a pivotal role in shaping the iwi’s modern identity and strengthening our cultural, social, and economic foundations. His commitment to revitalising te reo Maaori and protecting traditional knowledge has ensured the preservation and growth of Ngaa Rauru’s unique identity for future generations.

Over the years, Mike’s leadership saw the establishment of numerous initiatives that bolstered iwi development, including investments in advanced technology, cultural opportunities, and governance capability. Under his stewardship, Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi strengthened our role as a kaitiaki of our whenua and taonga and navigated modern challenges with resilience and unity.

Reflecting on his tenure, Mike said, “It has been an honour to serve as Tumu Whakarae for Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi for the past six years. We have built a strong foundation over the years, guided by our tikanga and values, and those lessons will continue to steer us toward a prosperous future. Our unique identity as Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi is our greatest strength.”

Te Kaahui o Rauru extends its heartfelt gratitude to Mike for his unwavering dedication, passion, and vision. His influence on Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi’s revitalisation and progress will be felt for many years to come, and the iwi looks forward to his continued contributions in other capacities.

Tahinganui Hina will serve as Tumu Whakarae until October 2027, bringing fresh energy to Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi’s journey forward while honouring the legacy of those who came before him.
